About Porthead Tavern and Hamiltons Restaurant
Porthead Tavern and Hamiltons Restaurant is a bar and grill in Irvine town centre, at 2 High St, and it works as a local pub. The bar area and the dining area are separate, so a drink at the bar and a sit-down meal each have their own space. The starters include haggis samosas with spicy onions, yogurt and mint, which put haggis in a handheld, spiced form. Fish and chips covers the main course, and sticky toffee pudding closes the meal. Tables can be booked for the dining area.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the haggis, whether as haggis samosas with spicy onions and yogurt and mint or simply as the haggis starter. Fish and chips come close behind, with the batter called light and the fish flakey. Others praise the sticky toffee pudding, the lemon meringue pie, the steak pie, and Cajun chicken described as tender with a flavourful sauce. Reviewers describe friendly, chatty staff, a cosy and lovely atmosphere, and a group birthday meal for 19 that went well. The lasagne divides opinion, praised by one diner and criticised by another for burned edges and very hard fries. Two reviewers report poor visits. One describes tiny portions, repeated attempts to get two colas right, and being charged for a can not ordered. The other describes a booked table that was not ready, a draughty seat by a door that would not shut, and a second round of drinks that never arrived before the bill did.

“The soup, potato and leek was a great, very tasty with a scorching hot side roll. My wife had the lentil which she described as amazing. For main, I stuck to the old tried and tested fish and chips. The fish batter was light, and the fish so flakey, it was cooked beautifully. Although I did not order sweet, that that was served to others looked well presented was reported as being delicious. I found the service to be exceptional and could not hesitate to recommend Hamiltons excellance.”

“Took my boyfriend here as a treat for valentines day. We've been here before and the service was fab as was the food and atmosphere. But quite disappointed this time. Booked a table several days in advance, table wasn't ready when we arrived. We were told to wait in the bar which was overcrowded, couldn't even get service for a drink. So we stood near the entrance for 15 minutes. We were seated right next to the door that leads to the toilet and an exit, the door didn't shut properly so we heard the hand driers constantly, we couldn'thear the music or each other, it was cold and very drafty, I ended up with a mouthful of my own hair while eating due to the breeze coming through. We ordered 3 courses, and drinks, we received our drinks within a timely manner. The starters tasted great, we both had the garlic mushrooms with a slice of garlic bread. We asked for more garlic bread as one slice wasn't much. Then came the main course. Again, both had the same, lasagne with fries and a slice of garlic bread. The fries were very hard, the lasagne burned round the edges so I left quite a lot. When the staff member came for the plates, we asked for more drinks. We received our pudding shortly after but no drinks. It was busy, couldn't get anyone attention so we ate the pudding which didn't taste very good, baileys cheesecake and ice cream. It was quite bland for a cheesecake. We got the bill as we still hadn't received our 2nd drink. I was quite shocked at the price of 4 slices of garlic bread, £6.80 but paid anyway. I asked the staff member who took the order for our 2nd drink about not receiving them, she claimed we didn't ask her and offered us drinks but we paid and was leaving. I don't think we'll be back anytime soon.”
