Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the fish and chips, praising the fresh haddock and cod, the crispy batter and the huge portions, with chips cooked the traditional way in lard. Close behind is the deep fried Wensleydale, which several order alongside their fish, and one reviewer says it turned them into a devotee of fried cheese. Others mention a homemade steak pie with chips and onion gravy, battered haggis, a fried black pudding butty, and a curry sauce so good one diner ordered a second round. The main trade-off is the crowd. Reviewers describe long queues for takeaway and dine in on Friday and Saturday evenings, and one says the food took a while because the staff were slammed, though they did not hold it against them. One diner found the waitress less welcoming than hoped but put it down to a busy day. Reviewers still describe the team as a well oiled machine, and one says the queue was still stretching down the street when they left with their steak pie.

“People for miles around (literally) say this is the best chippie. It’s certainly the best I’ve been to. They’ve turned me into a devotee of fried cheese.”

“We had fish (haddock) and chips and the homemade steak pie for lunch which were both equally delicious! The waitress that welcomed us that day was not as welcoming as we wished but it must have been a busy and stressful day. Overall we would recommend!”

“We were recommended to visit The Chippie, as we are touring the area. The best fish & chips ever, we ate them in the restaurant & the service was first class, very friendly & efficient, as they were very busy. You can see why. We tried the local specialty, Wensleydale deep fried, amazing.”

“We had a takeaway. It was a Friday evening at around 19.20. I was queing outside along with 10 others behind me. Everything was cooked fresh. My description of the food is that it was epic. My wife had the best steak pie chips and onion gravy. This was better than any top restaurant. Thr amount of steak in thr pie was unbelievable. It was amazing. I had fish, chips and mushy peas. This was lovely but I did have food envy. Im not sure what time thr guys actually shut the chip shop with the size of the que when I left. The whole team looked like a well oiled machine. The very best chippy I have visited. Thank you”

“I called in The Chippie as I was staying in Hawes for the night, the fish and chips were some of the best I've had. The fish was well cooked with crispy batter, the chips nice and brown, decent size portion for £11.95”
