About Olivers Fish Shop & Restaurant

Olivers Fish Shop & Restaurant is an old-school fish and chip shop at 34 Cold Bath Rd in Harrogate, with a sit-down dining room as well as the counter. Fish is cooked fresh to order and served with chips, mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter. Small and regular portions are both available. Curry sauce is offered as a side. Spam fritters and chip butties also appear on the menu, so the choice runs beyond battered fish. Spirits and beer are served for those who stay to eat. The decor and menu follow the traditional chippy style. The shop is open daily.

“Stopped here whilst staying in Harrogate overnight. The food was delicious. The chips were crispy, not greasy and soggy. The fish was white and chunky. The portions were on the smaller side but the quality of the food is great.”

“Stopped in here whilst staying in Harrogate a couple of weeks ago. There is both takeaway and restaurant. The fish & chips were perfect, cooked fresh as we waited! Lovely crispy batter on the fish. We also had peas & curry sauce which were great! Lots of traditional chippy options on the menu. 100% recommend.”

“My wife and I called at the restaurant 15-20 minutes before the restaurant closed. We were a little surprised that the lady said even though they were due to close they would serve us. That was very kind. The fish and chips were good. Thank you so much.”

“During our visit to Harrogate in July 26 we came across this place, he had just opened for the day, fish & chips and two sides and can of pop. By far best meal we had that day and one of if not the best during our trip”

“The fish was absolutely huge, fresh, and delicious! As for the decor, it might not be super modern or fancy, but it’s just normal and honest—exactly what you’d expect from a proper fish and chips shop. After all, it's about the food, not a fashion show. Highly recommended!”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return above all for the haddock and chips, praising the light, crispy batter and fish described as huge, fresh, white and chunky. Close behind are the sides, with mushy peas and curry sauce called great, and one diner enjoying spam fritters and a chip butty alongside tea for two. Several describe a traditional, old school feel, with decor one reviewer calls normal and honest rather than modern or fancy. The women serving are repeatedly called lovely and welcoming, and one reviewer mentions a family feel. The one caveat is portion size, as one reviewer found portions on the smaller side though the quality held up, while another found a small fish and chips plenty. A takeaway ordered through Deliveroo arrived quick and hot, and one reviewer notes fish bits can be bought for cats. Another couple arrived shortly before closing and were still served.
