  “The chips were fantastic and the fish got better as I ate it. For the price, the quality is unmatched. There were quite a few people queuing but the staff were efficient, kind and helpful. We came all the way from Preston to try this and we are more than happy that we did! Thank you so much!”

  “If you are looking for a proper, authentic fish and chip experience, look no further than Mathews Chippy. I’ve been meaning to visit for a while, and it completely lives up to the reputation. The standout for me is undoubtedly their signature haddock; you can really taste the difference because it’s cooked in traditional beef dripping, which gives it that perfect, rich flavor that’s hard to find these days. ​It’s easy to see why this spot is so popular—even with the queues that form down the pavement, it is absolutely worth the wait for food this fresh. My advice to anyone planning a visit: make sure to arrive early before the 4:30 PM opening time if you want to get ahead of the crowds, and definitely remember to bring cash with you, as they do not accept credit or debit cards. Everything about the experience feels genuine and high-quality. A well-deserved 5 stars!"”

  “Super value for money. You might get bigger fish elsewhere but you will pay a premium for it. Fish, chips and mushy peas or curry sauce or beans or gravy only £3.00. service is first class and food always cooked fresh because of how busy it is. Cash only. Here we are now after Easter ,2026 and prices have had to go up. We now pay a heady £3.50. Still superb value for money. Good banter in shop with all the friendly staff”

  “First time here today drove over from hull to try. Firstly well done for providing cheap priced food for a local community and for giving everyone chance to get a hot meal. Waited about 10 mins very busy had the £3.50 fish chips and peas in a box and ate in the car. Good sized portion of food the fish was excellent nice taste good batter the peas were superb thick and very tasty the slight let down was the chips they were very bitty and quite hard on the outside. But hey it's £3.50 and on the whole enjoyed it. Got quite a name for itself now”

  “Always have to have fish & chips when Im back home, never knew this place existed till I walked past one evening and it was absolutely heaving! Im going back I thought and after reading reviews about cheapest chippy in UK etc I thought well its going to be a piddly portion so I better add an extra fishcake, boy was I wrong! The fish isn’t the largest but what do you expect for £3, it was however fresh, tasty & perfectly cooked, loads of chips, scraps & mushy peas. You could lay bricks with the gravy, its awesome stuff, just how I like it! Fishcake had that old fashioned taste, lovely! I have no idea how they make a profit on this and anyone complaining about anything should give their head a wobble! I think you could probably call it charitable, hats off to the owners and a massive thank you! I had to have it one more time before leaving GY so last night I returned, wasn’t so hungry so stopped the lady at one scoop of chips (and no fishcake) Fish, chips, mushy peas, gravy, scaps & plenty of salt & vinegar ❤️ Keep it Northern!!! Cheap & best 10/10”

  “After watching several online reviews claiming to have found the cheapest fish supper in the UK, I decided to take a trip on behalf of The Chippy Tour to see it for myself. The first thing that struck me was the shop's location in a close-knit community, where local support is strong and evident. The staff were exceptionally friendly, and the shop was spotless and well-maintained. The prices truly lived up to the hype. For just £3, you get fish, chips, and peas, which is fantastic value. From what I've heard, they’re not making any profit at this price – it's a labour of love for the community and those facing financial difficulties, which is admirable. Now, while you shouldn’t expect the largest portion, the taste certainly makes up for it. Other items on the menu are equally affordable, with battered onion rings priced so cheaply that I couldn't resist! It’s incredible to see so many options at such low prices. I must also address some misconceptions. Contrary to a recent YouTube review, the fish here is not smoked, and they cook using beef dripping, not oil. For those like me who aren’t fans of smoked haddock and love beef dripping, this is great news. All in all, a delightful visit to a chippy that clearly cares about its community.
