About The Smokehouse Ormesby
The Smokehouse Ormesby is a barbecue restaurant at the Grange Hotel in Great Yarmouth, open since September 2018. The kitchen smokes its meats in house using its own recipe rubs, and a house-brewed smokehouse lager is made to go with them. The menu runs to 57 dishes, from smoked brisket and ribs to burgers, with Texan Dirty Fries on the side. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options sit alongside the meat. The building carries American signs and memorabilia throughout, and the dining areas sit on various levels, with booth seating. Reservations are required, and groups of 6 to 11 can book a table. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the slow-smoked meats, especially ribs and brisket that fall off the bone, described as tender, soft, smokey and juicy. Close behind are the huge portions, with the blooming onion, the Rack Slabbath, and the fries and slaw named as highlights. Several also mention the American themed decor and friendly, attentive staff who handled allergies and dietary needs. The main complaints come from larger parties. One group of eight waited a long time for mains that arrived dry, as if left under heat lamps, and found garlic in the mac and cheese that the menu did not state. They also called the ribs woody. The server said they should have spoken up mid-meal, and no discount was offered. Another reviewer disliked the flavour of the burgers and found the TVs playing clips distracting for a three year old. A latte with thick foam and a chilly room drew minor grumbles. One reviewer notes the kids' spag bol is big enough for two, and another left with three takeaway boxes.

“We called to book in but as there were 11 of us, we had to book for the following day. No problem. Worth noting though, to book a table in advance. Parking not too bad, we all managed to get a space. We were seated in a sort of booth, very nice, all together and voukd see each other and chat accordingly too. Our waitress was efficient, friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. She was able to advise us regarding portions and the various types of dishes. Our order was taken without drama, drinks arrived quickly. My latte was a bit disappointing as it had about 3 cm of foamy fluff which when I spooned it off have me a small coffee but never mind! I was personally freezing cold as the air con was working well. I managed to borrow a hoody from my son so easily resolved. Food came out within the time frame given. Everyone's order was correct, delicious and thoroughly enjoyed by us all. Staff were very polite. Despite my personal moaning I would return. A very good place to enjoy a meal.”

“Not for me on this occasion! Let me start by saying the service was great. Everyone I interacted with were really friendly and you were able to have abit of a joke with them which is rare in alot of places. Once my party of 7 were seated our drinks order was quickly taken and didn’t take long for them to arrive with the order. Equally food order was taken quickly and were really on it with allergies. The rest of the review is based on my personal preference with food. I chose the cheese burger because the smell coming in was fantastic. And being a Sunday lunch while on Dad duties didn’t want to overfill on the big tray with a bit of everything. I completely understand how the food is cooked but for me the flavours today weren’t for me. I can’t put my finger on it but I just didn’t like the flavour profile of the burgers. There was a flavour that I just couldn’t get past. The fries however were delicious as well as the slaw. I think I’ll veer towards the briskets, steaks and hotdogs next time as these sounded and looked good from the people around our table. Other than the food the slight downside for me were the TVs playing blooper clips from social media and old movie trailers. Just as a parent this was wildly distracting for my 3 year old. So much so that she hardly ate anything. Needless to say the spag bol we took home was delicious. So fyi the kids portion of the spag Bol is massive and will serve 2 people 😅 But honestly the place had a great vibe and I would definitely visit again to try more of the menu at some point in the future.”

“Went for a meal whilst on holiday in Norfolk. Had previously called ahead to check that it was accessible and that sauce could be an option on food, due to a child with ARFID. On arrival, there is ramp to the entrance. The left turn into the restaurant area from the entrance is quite tight for a wheelchair, but is possible. The dining areas are located on various levels, but there is plenty of seating available on the ground level for those needing it. We were welcomed by a very friendly waitress, Carrie, who explained exactly how the menu worked. The menu selection was a feast of the very best smoked meats, burgers, steaks, all the sides you can think of and of course options for vegans too. I chose the brisket and its easily one of the best ive ever had. My child who can be hit or miss, had a sirloin steak and fries. Completely plain and he loved it. The entire atmosphere of the place is very relaxed and designed to be somewhere to chat over a meal, not be on a device. Just one glance around the place and you'll have a conversation starter, as the whole building is decorated with various signs and memorabilia. From start to finish, we were looked after by Carrie and felt like we didnt want to leave. My child is already planning our return. Outstanding food, outstanding service.”

“Booked a table of 6 and had a great night. The food was delicious and the portions were huge so good value for money. The ribs were so tender they were falling off the bone and the brisket was soft, smokey and juicy. The venue had some really cool American themed decore and the staff were attentive and helpful. Would happily recommend but go hungry!”

“The atmosphere was great, good decor and all themed well. We arrived at our booked time and was greeted by our host, after our order was taken it must have been shift end as we then had someone else for the rest of the evening which is where it obviously went wrong. After our starters, we waited ages for our main meal, there was 8 of us (4ad4ch) so assumed this was why so just patiently waited. However our host came over 3 times in that space to ask if we wanted anymore drinks and to remind us she was around in the other half of the room we couldn't see. When our food arrived it was dry, like it had been left under the heat lamps for just too long, making half of 2 meals inedible. The mac and cheese sides contained garlic which is not stated on the menu leaving it also unable to be eaten and a waste of money as we wouldn't have ordered it otherwise. We also had two other meals not liked but put that down to personal taste as the ribs were too "woody" tasting and the sausages were disliked. When we told the host our issues she said "oh I'm sorry if you'd said something whilst eating we could have got you another" except we saw her only once within our first 2 mouthfuls. I felt that perhaps the two meals should have been offered to be slightly discounted for the inconvenience but nothing. We left feeling pretty annoyed having spent nearly £300! Would not visit again unfortunately.”
