About Cartmel Village Shop
Cartmel Village Shop is a deli in Grange Over Sands, at 1 The Square, where the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding is baked in the back kitchen and sold packaged to take away. The puddings come in original, chocolate, ginger and sticky banana flavours. Sizes run from small portions to family and share packs, so a single serving and a pudding for the table are both covered. The shop also stocks other puddings, cheese, sweets and local artisan produce, along with gift ideas. Upstairs, a cafe serves soup, quiche, sandwiches, salads and cakes, with hot and cold drinks.

Customer Review Summary
The criticism centres on the pudding itself. One visitor was served it in a microwavable plastic tub and tasted plastic. A mail-order customer found the basic sticky toffee pudding over-sweet and tasteless, while the toffee apple crumble tasted home-made and the sticky banana pudding landed in the middle, like banana loaf with sauce. One reviewer notes the upstairs cafe can get busy, though everything seems available to take away.

“While Cartmel didn't invent Sticky Toffee Pudding, it's origins actually heavily debated, they are credited with perfecting and commercializing the takeaway version. Since 1989, Howard and Jean Johns have been baking and selling the famous packaged Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding in the back kitchen of the village shop, and along with their other puddings it's definitely worth a look if in the area.”

“Was so excited to visit here and made a special trip, as sticky toffee pudding is one of my all-time favourites. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to the hype. It was served in a microwavable plastic tub and, sadly, had a noticeable plastic taste. Such a disappointment, as I'd really been looking forward to trying it. *I am well aware it can't be served on China plates with silver spoons!!! I was merley stating it had a plastic taste, like when you buy the pots from a supermarket. I wasn't aware it was served like this. I thought it was freshly made. Maybe some non plastic dishes maybe a better option, instead of more plastic!!!*”

“Quaint little place in the Southern Lakes. Famous for its sticky toffee pudding but also has many other varieties and very reasonably priced. They should sell custard to go with the puddings though! 🤩 (If they do it wasn't in my face obvious or I wouldn't have needed to go to the supermarket!🤣) Freidnly staff and lots of parking (stay for one hour free)”

“I’m reviewing only the mail order service & products here, having seen a YouTube review of the village & cafe which sells “famous” sticky toffee pudding, I had to try this!! I ordered a large sticky toffee pud, a medium sticky banana pud, and a small toffee apple crumble. (As the min order was £15). The range of quality was surprising! By far the best was the apple crumble; it really tasted home-made. By a long way, the basic sticky toffee pud was the most awful; it was over-sweet, tasteless, and like the kind you’d buy from a really cheap supermarket. Sorry, a real disappointment. And the use by date is about 8 weeks so presumably full of preservatives. The banana one was ok, somewhere in the middle. It was like banana loaf with the sticky toffee sauce on top.”
