About 1953 Bar and Restaurant

1953 Bar and Restaurant serves Nepalese and Indian dishes from 112 High St in Galashiels, in a former Royal Bank of Scotland building. The Nepalese side of the menu draws on dishes from different areas of Nepal and the wider region. Chicken bhuteko and lamb bhuna are among the mains, each served with rice and naan. Starters include bhajis, three to a plate, and poppadoms are served as well. The kitchen adjusts spice level on request and adapts dishes for vegan meals when they are requested in advance. All the food is halal. Reservations are required, and a private dining room is available for groups.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the flavour of the food, with several noting a Nepalese lean to the menu. Bhajis arrive large and full of flavour, one reviewer calls the korma the best they have had, and a lamb bhuna and tender, perfectly cooked chicken dishes earn similar credit. The poppadoms are described as light, and the mango lassi as very nice. Close behind is friendly, prompt service, with staff adjusting the spice level and a vegan meal arranged by phone without any fuss. Portions split opinion. Some find them adequate or great, while one reviewer found the chicken starter very small, the ice cream tiny, and was left hungry for the money spent. Another found the chicken Bhuteko bland, with the dips the high point. That reviewer also said a server left starter plates on the table, mumbled the dish name, and nobody checked on the meal. Birthdays recur in the praise, including a group of seven sung to with a cake and a mother given a wee dessert as happy birthday played.

“Dined here twice now, once with friends, once with my husband. Both times the service was very, very good, efficient and friendly. The food was delicious. Thought we would order a starter to share and asked for a the bhajis options, 3 turned up on a plate, we were happy not to have ordered a starter each, they were quite big and full of flavour. Not sure why some reviews suggest the portion sizes are small, how much curry can one person eat! My korma was the best I have had, my husbands lamb bhuna was delicious and coupled with the rice and naan we couldn’t have eaten another thing. The portion sizes in our opinion are very adequate. Didn’t see the lassi in the menu but my husband asked for one and was told they did a mango one which he ordered, very nice. Forget the supermarket poppadoms, one’s here are like eating a lovely light wafer and taste lovely.”

“Our opinion is that this is more Nepalese than Indian. For us this was a delight as we had recently visited Nepal for a family event and were delighted by the food, friendliness, and hospitality of the people. The small sampling of the menu we enjoyed was spot on excellent. Reasonable portions, and excellent attention to preparation and presentation. The chicken dishes were notable in that the meat was very tender and perfectly cooked. Nepalese seasonings, when done correctly are exquisite. I would definitely return multiple times just to try more or their offerings. They are more than willing to moderate or ramp up the spice level and heat relative to your particular palate. The wait-staff was friendly and prompt. Made good recommendations, and did their very best to ensure we had a memorable experience. My wife and I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning at some point in the near future (from California). Seriously, we would have no problem driving down from Edinburgh for a delightful day in the Borderlands and a great meal at 1953. Enjoy!”

“Ordered a vegan meal from here for the first time tonight, and it was outstanding. Called beforehand to double check the restaurant were okay with this, and they couldn’t have been nicer about it. Nothing was a problem! Portion sizes from here have always been great and it was no different tonight. Highly recommend - thank you so much.”

“The best thing about the meal was the dips. The main of chicken Bhuteko was bland with not much flavour to it. The Balti was a bit better. The service started off well then a male colleague took over. He didn't clear away the starter plates when he brought the mains. He mumbled the name of the dish so I asked him to repeat what he said. He asked me "did I forget what I had ordered " No one came over to ask if everything was ok. It was disappointing as it's a really nice restaurant.”
