About Fish & Chips

Fish & Chips is a fish and chips shop at Corner Cafe in Filey that cooks gluten free fish and chips to order, which gives guests who avoid gluten a choice on the menu. The regular fish and chips come in small and regular sizes, and battered sausage and chips is also on the menu. Curry sauce is available as a side portion. Customers sit down after ordering and wait for the counter staff to call out their order. Salt and vinegar are provided at the table, so each diner seasons their own meal.

Customer Review Summary

Freshly cooked fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers describing thick, flaky fish served red hot and cooked to order. A battered sausage and the haddock also earn approval. The gluten free fish and chips come next. One reviewer calls them delicious and says the owner goes out of his way to make them, while another admired the golden batter on a portion at a neighbouring table. Curry sauce splits opinion, praised by one diner and called spicy, runny and not like chip shop curry by another. Complaints are nearly as frequent as the praise. They centre on chips described as overdone, cold and dry, or seeming a day old, plus batter that tasted of oil that needed changing. Several found the service unwelcoming, citing a rude server, an owner rolling his eyes at a request for beef dripping chips, and a charge for a ketchup sachet. Others mention one salt and vinegar pot shared across tables, a small order missing its mushy peas, and takeaway boxes that would not close over the portions.

“Stopped for lunch here today at about 14:00. No customers waiting. I asked for Gluten free fish and chips to be told it was cash only as he needed to boot up the fryer!? The signage says you can pay by card. Off I went to the local cashpoint and got cash. I ordered a gluten free fish and chips, and one small fish, chips and mushy peas. We were asked to sit outside and we would be notified when ready. After about 15 mins there was a shout from behind the counter to say ready. Being hard of hearing this was only just heard and the expectation was someone was coming out with it. The Food! 😞 Dissappointing. The gluten free fish and chips was about 7 out of 10 and my small fish and chips came minus the mushy peas. Chips were overcooked and seemed 24 hours old. Best of all, he had one salt and vinegar pot for multiple tables, bizarre! Needless to say we will not be frequenting this establishment in the future.”

“Asked for beef drippings chips to the owners dismay. Rolls his eyes and crosses his arms.. What we actually got was already cooked chips tossed into beef dripping for 5 minutes. Could cut someone's through with them. The lass in there is lovely. But she is the only thing that is nice about the place.”

“Probably the most unwelcoming chip shop I've ever walked into. We were on a coach trip so had a few hours in Filey and saw this place when we got off the coach. Outside it said eat in or takeaway and after walking around Filey, decided it would be good to have Fish and Chips here so we had got the walking out of the way and were already close to the bus station so we walked in at 3.40pm in the afternoon. What greeted us was not what we expected. First of all it was very dark as the lights were turned off. There was 1 dirty metal table and no chairs snd 3 elderly people who we think had already been served and were waiting but we weren't sure. The hot boxes above the fryers where the food should be were not lit up and empty except the one nearest the counter which just had about 4 or 5 sausages in and nothing else. There was a girl behind the counter who neither acknowledged our existence or smiled. Then a man came out of the back carrying a chair for the 3 elderly people and told them they only had 1 chair. We weren't there long enough to find out what that was about but I can't help wondering if they had also come in expecting to eat in and were going to share that 1 chair. . They were showing on here as open all day and it was 3.40pm but I genuinely thought we had walked in after it had closed and so my first question was are you open? Surprisingly it was so I decided that although it was hardly the eat in we were promised from outside (there are a few old wooden picnic benches outside but not much use in the pouring rain that currently was) we could fight Foggy, Compo and Nora for the chair and me and my wife could take turns with the chair and dirty old table making sure we sat as close to the window as possible so we could actually see we and we would order food as we were already next to the bus station I ordered but by now everyone was confused, the 3 others were sorting out their chair share, the guy behind the fryers was trying to understand why someone would want to actually sit down to eat in and the girl was still recovering from me thinking they were closed just because the lights were turned off, hardly any food, the fryers unlit and a distinct lack of furniture but order we did although not very successfully because this is were it went downhill. I will point out here I fully understand the difficulties faced by chip shops with the rising costs of fish, potatoes, bills etc, I hadn't even looked at the price and wouldn't have quibled the price of the cooked food at all although it has since crossed my mind that everything is out of sight so you can't see what you are getting. Now enter my wife into the equation who is clearly wondering why I have brought her to a dark place that only sells sausages to watch 3 pensioners fighting over an old chair and thinking she only had a choice of battered or unbattered opted for battered. The non smiley girl then asked if she wanted her curry sauce over her sausage or seperate confusing me because no one mentioned curry sauce and confusing my wife who thought they only had sausages left but she explained she didn't want curry sauce but would like tomato ketchup on it. Now most places either have ketchup in a bottle to help yourself or satchets which are either free or occasionally some charge around 10p which is fair enough however we were offered a satchet (the slightly larger squeeze me satchets) of tomato ketchup and told they were 60p. I queried this straight away as I genuinely thought she had made a mistake but no in her usual non smiley manner it was 60p. I felt this was a rip off (I checked later to make sure I wasn't wrong and found a few wholesale prices ranging from 9p each up to 20p each) and I told her so to which I was told the only other option was to buy a full bottle. This was the point I really didn't want to give this place any business at all and we walked out”

“Best chippie I've had in a long time. Fish and Chips & Sausage and chips with a portion of curry sauce. All cooked fresh, nice and hot, thick flaky fish and curry sauce was amazing”

“Says gluten free menu... but cooked fish and put it in the same warming section as gluten items, used same tong to handle it as well... have no idea about cross contamination. If I had not been watching my wife would have been ill all the rest of birthday week. Coeliacs avoid at all costs !!!!”
