About The Red Lion

On East St in Fareham, The Red Lion is a pub and restaurant with rooms available in the main building and in a separate Annexe. The restaurant runs to set opening hours, and when it is fully booked, the separate bar area covers food and drinks instead. Sunday roast is served, and meals can take an extended wait during service. Guests staying overnight get breakfast included before checkout. The pub opens daily and takes walk-ins rather than reservations. A bakery shop sits opposite the premises.

“We visited around 5pm on a Friday night. Restaurant was fully booked, although opens at 6pm. We were able to sit in bar and order food. Food arrived quickly and was well cooked. We did have to chase drinks, unfortunately where we purchased via the app the slip had been thrown away. Quickly rectified though. I would recommend if you’re in the area.”

“Nothing wrong with the room or reception at all. However it took an hour to get our meals. Wasn't too busy in the scheme of things. Got told after nearly 40 minutes of waiting one of our meals couldn't be done. Meals finally arrived and one didn't have it's side dish and the other had a only partially cooked egg.”

“Only visited for Sunday roast and it was alright with some good elements and not so good our teen grandson had "bits of gristle " in his burger. Our Sunday roast was warm to say at best.”

“Know what you’re getting; this is a stereotypical pub hotel, and it is a great one! Clean, comfortable, good food and a reasonable price for a Guinness. Only complaints are that noise outside the ground floor windows disturbed my sleep, and the reception staff were a bit grumpy. All round though, a solid stay.”

“The staff are great, welcoming and friendly. The rok is fine, for a 1 or 2 night stay.|Biggest problem, housekeeping, my room had been cleaned, so why are long, drakes games in my bathtub, when my hair is short and blonde?”

Customer Review Summary

Overnight stays are the main draw, with reviewers describing a spacious, clean room, a very comfy bed and a delicious breakfast with plenty of it. Heat is the most repeated complaint. On the top floor the room stayed hot, the window opened only about six inches and early sun warmed it, and one reviewer suggests a larger floor fan. Noise outside ground floor windows and a room beside reception also disturbed sleep. Food service draws the sharpest criticism. One table waited a long time, was told a meal could not be done, then received a dish without its side and another with a partially cooked egg. A Sunday roast arrived only warm. Staff split opinion: helpful and friendly to some, grumpy at reception or unsmiling at the bar to others. One guest noted that a fan was provided when the heat became a problem.
