About The Yard - by Silver Oak
The Yard - by Silver Oak is a cafe on Newnham St in Ely that brings a coffee shop, restaurant and bar together, all run by the team from a micro roastery. Lattes come from a separate coffee bar, while the bar pours ciders, cocktails and mojitos. The street-food style menu includes pizzas, sliders and BBQ chicken wings, and the breakfast menu has a vegan or veggie bagel. Orders are placed at the counter, and a buzzer goes off when the food is ready. Heated, roofed pods come with a roof heater, blankets and faux fur rugs. The space can be reserved for events, including a wedding reception, a group of about 70 and an author talk with signed books. The Yard is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what most reviewers return to, with lattes called the best in Ely and another diner saying it matches any on the high street. Breakfast comes close behind, described as cooked perfectly by one diner, and a veggie option pleased another who sat in a pod with a roof heater, blankets and faux fur rugs. Several mention friendly, helpful staff, a relaxed atmosphere and that the place is dog friendly. Event hosts praise a street food buffet of pizzas, mini sliders and bbq chicken wings, along with fruity ciders, cocktails and good mojitos. Food draws mixed reports. One diner found the rice bowls bland and small, and the milkshake made with powder rather than ice cream. Another waited over an hour for a vegan bagel that arrived burnt in places with the hash browns missing, and says the counter staff offered a refund but no replacement and no apology.

“We loved our visit to the yard, it was just perfect. We reserved an area for around 70 people, and we were able to arrange for a table to be sorted for our guests for food and drink - the team made this super easy for us to do. All our guests were super impressed with the venue, the perfect chilled spot with great food and drink options.”

“This place looks like a great place to eat and drink, and has a nice atmosphere, and great options for sitting indoors or out. But today was our first time going, and as mentioned when we got here, we were happy with the look of it, atmosphere etc. We were told max time for waiting was 45 mins for food(but likely less) which was fine. It then took over an hour to get our food (which was a vegan bagel (avocado, chilli jam and spinach) with 2 hash browns + side of coleslaw and a side of fries). When we eventually got our food, the hash browns were missing (which after going to investigate we then got given them), and then further inspection of the bagel, it was black in places - as per photo! And the amount of filling for the price was disappointing, taking a bite, all you could taste was burnt bagel. We aren't people to complain about food, generally just get on with it and suck it up if its a bad meal, but due to the wait and the bagel being majorly burnt, we spoke to the main lady that was on the counter, which she replied 'there's nothing I can do about it, do you want a refund' she was very quite rude, no customer service skills, no offer to get replacement, not apologetic BUT they are good to offer a refund so thats what we accepted (still waiting for this to come through). We did eat the fries and fennel coleslaw, both were nice. But overall a rubbish experience on my partners first father's day!!”

“Harry Baker was totally brilliant and it was a pleasure to listen to his very fine way with words. The staff were all so pleasant and helpful with good service at the bar. I would come back and like to try the food. This is a great venue and well done on having such a quality event, signed books and posters were available.”

“The place was nice , and the mojitos were pretty good. However, the rice bowls were kind of disappointing without much flavour, and relatively small portions. The mac n cheese side was tasty and of good size. The milkshake was made with powder and not ice cream so quite disappointing…”

“I love the yard. Food is always delicious and it goes without saying the best coffee around. A big Bonus is that they are super dog friendly. Very relaxed atmosphere, staff are friendly and helpful. Has to be the best place to g in town.”
