About The Fishmarket

On Pier Pl in Edinburgh, The Fishmarket is a seafood restaurant serving sustainable, boat-to-table fish 'n' chips from a 45-dish menu. Haddock or cod comes battered or breaded, and the Standard Battered Haddock sits alongside a Kids Haddock, Chips & Mushy Peas for younger diners. Curry sauce is a common order with the chips. Beyond the fryer, the menu runs to oysters, scallops, scampi, calamari and mussels, plus daily specials. Chowder comes in clam and smoked haddock versions. The sit-down dining room is limited in size, and a queue forms at the counter.

Customer Review Summary

Battered haddock and cod with chips is the draw for most reviewers, who describe a light, crisp or golden batter around fresh fish that falls apart, with one saying it was not at all fishy tasting. Close behind are the curry sauce, called phenomenal by one reviewer and a match for the sauce back home by another, and the haggis bon bons, rich and full of flavour for a first-time haggis eater. Others single out the smoked haddock chowder, fried calamari, scallops and mussels, and a sticky toffee pudding. The main complaint comes from one diner who found the breaded haddock short on flavour and more batter than fish, with oysters that had shell fragments and looked mangled. One reviewer adds that regular chips go soggy quickly and suggests asking for them double fried. Two reviewers suggest reserving because the dining room is limited, while others prefer takeaway on the outside benches with a beer. One reviewer who is not usually a fish fan finished the entire portion of standard haddock.

“A good proper chippy. We ordered the fried scampi, regular haddock, and a clam chowder. Overall, it was priced reasonably well. The haddock came to £10, while the scampi with chips came to £12. I recommend taking it away and sitting on one of the benches outside. Was pleasantly surprised by how good the curry sauce was. Coming from south east asia, this taste similar to the ones we get back home. Compliments the food very well and highly recommend getting one.”

“Exquisite food selection in a fresh setup where client could try proper fish & chips as well as other tasty dishes of the local cuisine. The staff is overall friendly but sometimes reluctant to timeline, although overall a very positive experience! Battered cod super recommended”

“First time in there. We were checking around others Restaurants but we decided to have lunch here because of the fresh fish. We thought It was going to be the classic fish and chips but we were surprised by the taste. We ordered Fried Calamaro and Breaded Haddock, both very tasty. We would like to highlight Megan's services who took care of us all the time. Highly recommended.👌🏻”

“Beautiful little seafood place right on the water. I had the fish and chips and they were excellent, wife had the scallops and mussels. The smoked haddock chowder is a must try..”

“Came in for some oyster and fried haddock Overall okay experience! Lovely staff that served us (thank you!) but the food was a bit lacklustre. The breaded haddock didn’t have a lot of flavour to it (batter could’ve used more salt likewise the mushy peas) and it was more batter than fish than expected. The oysters were tasty but had fragments of shell in them when I ate it, also weren’t cut very nicely and came out looking a bit mangled. The overall restaurant was gorgeous though For the price and given that they look a fish speciality restaurant expected a bit more.”
