Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the Carne Asada Loaded Fries, piled with cheddar, sour cream, pico de gallo, avocado crema and tender feather blade steak. Close behind are the Nashville Hot Hoagie special, the braveheart burger, the Mexican breakfast skillet and the poutine fries, with a haggis peppercorn hot dog, chicken tenders and a vegetarian Scottish breakfast also getting praise. The dirty sodas, including the Tropic Like It's Hot, draw enthusiasm, and one reviewer would return for them alone. Portions are called filling, and the staff are described as friendly, with quick service. The main complaints concern cost and attention: reviewers call the food overpriced, note chips are not included, and mention a service charge added without explanation. One says servers were not attentive and the wait for the check was long, and another felt staff spent time on their phones. Smaller notes include a mac and cheese that could be smoother and cheesier, and a salmon and king prawn dish one lunch diner did not enjoy. Dogs are welcome outside, and one reviewer left with a bag of bakes.

“Down the Hatch never fails to disappoint! Went straight for the old fav (Carne Asada Loaded Fries) and they were an absolute mountain of goodness! Tasty house‑seasoned fries covered in cheddar, sour cream, pico de gallo, avocado crema, a hit of Cholula, and that tender feather blade steak on top. Just a cracking mix of flavours and plenty to go around. The Tropic Like It’s Hot Dirty Soda was also worth a shout — sweet, creamy, and just a fun wee drink that suits the place perfectly. And obviously we couldn’t leave without trying one (or two) of their bakes, which were a nice wee sugary bonus on top of an already great lunch. Staff were friendly, service was quick, and the whole spot has such a good vibe. Will 100% return for another round in the not too distant future.”

“Food tasty , a bit overpriced for what it is. Staff ok - on their phones . Ordering tablets need to be cleaned . Customer with a dog feeding it with one of the baskets that the food is served with ! Kitchen- disgrace, really filthy. Window broken and the dirt! Was so evident. Chef eating food and putting his earphones in whilst no food that needed preparation. Radiator adjacent to tables was filthy. Table was still dirty , salt strewn over it . Overall- tasty food cant deny that. Food hygiene is a food hygiene that cant be relaxed . Service charge added? For what reason ? Table was dirty , service wasnt great , staff on phones etc .. Won't be back! Similar business that have clean toilets and dont add a service charge for no reason .”

“An absolute gem of a place. Terrific food, excellent service in a great location. Remember to log your car registration in the restaurant to get 3hrs parking which is long enough to eat and take a walk along South Queensferry. I got the braveheart burger, you should too!”

“We had a lovely meal at Down the Hatch when visiting south queensferry not too long ago. The portion sizes are just the right size and are super filling. There is a lovely atmosphere within the restaurant and is a perfect place to eat on a sunny afternoon. The price of food isn’t the best, especially as chips are not included. However, the portion size makes the price seem some sort worth it. The service of the food and drinks was quick but the servers were not the most attentive and we had to wait a while for our check and to be served initially. Overall would recommend the restaurant if you are in the area and are looking for some good scran.”
