About MARIA’S KITCHEN
Maria's Kitchen is an Italian deli and pasticceria on London Rd in Edinburgh, with savoury counter food and a pastry range under one roof. The arancini come in varied fillings, including ham and béchamel, and spinach and mozzarella. Sandwiches are made with fillings such as prosciutto and mozzarella. On the pastry side, cannoli sit alongside tiramisu and strawberry tarts, and the fruit tarts have a custard base. Birthday cakes are made to order, which suits anyone planning a cake ahead of a party. Pantry items are also sold for taking home. The shop is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Arancini are the draw at this Italian deli, with reviewers praising versions filled with ham and bechamel, spinach and mozzarella, and prosciutto, describing a crunchy outside and a rich, creamy or runny filling. Close behind are the sandwiches, including prosciutto and mozzarella and spicy salami, where the toasted bread is called crunchy, and the porchetta gets credit for umami and properly crunchy skin. Pastries also earn repeated mentions, especially sfogliatella, strawberry and fruit tarts, cannoli and tiramisu, and one reviewer orders birthday cakes there every year. Staff are described as friendly and helpful at explaining the options, and a few mention the small outside seating area. The main criticism comes from one reviewer across two visits, who found the focaccia not crispy even after toasting, the sandwich dry without sauce, the coppa and smoked burrata weak, and the rhubarb tart mushy at the bottom. That same reviewer noted staff let them customise a sandwich when it was quiet.

“The best tiramisu in the city!! Lovely Italian cafe, great takeaway sandwiches, although noticed you can sit outside if it's nice weather. They have a nice selection of pantry items also! Extremely friendly and helpful staff! Recommended highly!”

“This is the real deal Italian shop from a very kind native Italian owner. Great food and authentic Italian treats with a very high focus on quality. I would strongly recommend the strawberry tarts made with fresh whipped cream and the fruit tarts made from a delicious custard base, really incredible!”

“Dropped by for the first time and picked up mushroom and truffle gnocchi. It tasted great! also a sfogliatella which was the reason I went by hoping I could find one. Will definitely return when I’m in town. Still as good as ever. Super tasty food and very friendly owner. 😄”

“I went to Maria’s Kitchen based on the recommendation of a colleague and I have to thank them immensely because the food was out of this world delicious! I got the arancina and a prosciutto sandwich and both were delightful! The service we received was so warm and inviting. I would highly recommend this place and I would go back to try more any day! The food was so affordable and worth it!!!”
