About Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Durham
Set in the Indigo Hotel's historic dining room on Old Shire Hall, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Durham serves steak under a dome-shaped ceiling in a room whose architecture and interior are part of the setting. Steak cuts run from ribeye to Chateaubriand, served with chips, and the kitchen also plates Wheeler's Crispy Calamari alongside options for guests who do not eat steak. Diners can choose the à la carte or a two or three course set menu, and afternoon tea is served as well. Cocktails carry a good share of the drinks list, with a passion fruit martini and a frozen strawberry daiquiri among them, plus wines by the glass. Reservations are required, and guests may be asked to wait in the bar area before being seated. The restaurant opens daily, with 96 dishes across the menu.

Customer Review Summary
The steak draws the most comment, and reviewers split on it: one describes a friend's order as tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned, enough to change their view of steak in the UK, while another found a ribeye burnt outside and tough, and a third reports a medium rare arriving closer to medium with a lot of fat. Close behind is the building itself, a historic hotel dining room with a dome shaped ceiling that several call stunning. The Chateaubriand earns particular praise, and one reviewer who disliked much of the meal singles out the bar, calling the passion fruit martini and frozen strawberry daiquiri excellent while finding Wheeler's Crispy Calamari too salty and the creamed leaf spinach overcooked and yellowish. Service is likewise uneven: many describe warm, attentive staff who accommodated a dietary request, though one Valentine's booking involved multiple wrong or forgotten orders, and one party was met with a stained table left uncleaned from previous guests. Several note prices high for the food's standard.

“My daughters booked a table for Father's day as a surprise. Beautiful old building with lots of character. We had off the 2 or 3 course menu which did not go over the top with the amount of choices, this meant the quality of the food was better as the kitchen staff could concentrate more on the food. The service was spot on ,attentive but not over the top, leaving you to enjoy you meals.”

“I had a brilliant night out recently! The restaurant is stylish and set in a lovely old building, which adds to the vibe. The food was fantastic, especially the Chateaubriand—absolutely superb! The team were spot-on, greeting us warmly and keeping our drinks topped up without missing a beat. Overall, it was a top-notch dining experience, and I can't wait to come back!”

“Booked as a valentines treat for my better half and we had a lovely time, the building itself was stunning, atmosphere was lovely and the staff very friendly and welcoming. Food itself was expensive but you definitely get what you pay for as it was all incredible, the cocktails definitely didn’t disappoint either. The only negative from the night was that service was definitely lacking and pretty disappointing with multiple wrong/forgotten orders hence the missing star.”

“Without doubt, one of the finest meals we have eaten. Good service, excellent menu, and first class ingredients, impeccably cooked.”

“We were stunned by the beautiful architecture of the restaurant, especially by the dome shaped ceiling and generally spectacular design which gave us a very good first impression. Regarding the service, the receptionist seemed to be impatient and poor-mannered when finding our booking. She asked us to wait at the bar area before she came and delivered this request like a mother scolding her children. Her attire also seemed quite questionable, as she was wearing jeans, which seemed quite jarring considering the elegant interior of the restaurant as aforementioned. The best service exemplified by the reception area was when another very polite and friendly member of staff offered to hang the customers’ jackets in a closet. Unfortunately, when we were finally seated, we were shocked to find a patch of red sauce stain leftover on the table from the previous guests, left uncleaned. We also couldn’t help noticing the quality of the tables, which looked quite cheap. Sadly this marred our first impressions of the restaurant, and our experience only seemed to get worse as the evening progressed. We ordered: CLASSIC PRAWN COCKTAIL The prawn cocktail itself was tasty. The brown bread that came with it was dry. WHEELER'S CRISPY CALAMARI Very crispy but definitely too salty. RIBEYE STEAK (medium-well) While the menu recommended the steak to be cooked medium, we asked for medium well, and expected, given that the restaurant purported to be a ‘steakhouse’, that it would not be an awfully difficult task. However, the steak we had was burnt on the outside and overall, the texture was a bit gritty and tough. The chips were nicely done. CREAMED LEAF SPINACH WITH HORSERADISH The leaf spinach came yellowish and this, coupled with the bitter and acidic taste, indicated that it had obviously been overcooked. The drinks as below were excellent. Praise to the bar! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 P. STAR MARTINI Very tasty and not too sweet. Really loved how how the passionfruit flavour was not too strong! FROZEN STRAWBERRY DAQUIRI Very refreshing and also perfectly sweet. V. P. STAR The half passion fruit was fresh and juicy. The drink tasted great. Would definitely recommend their drinks. Honestly, this was a disappointing experience overall, especially because we had read such stellar reviews before coming. However, given the decent prices, the quality of the food is more forgivable.”
