About Claypath Delicatessen

Claypath Delicatessen is a family-run deli at 57 Claypath in Durham that runs a beginner's sourdough baking course with lunch. Attendees are given drinks on arrival and leave with a baked loaf, dough for a second loaf and their own starter. The same home-baked sourdough forms the base of the food, including sourdough buns with hummus and jalapenos. Coffee is served alongside cakes and pastries, among them Basque cheesecake and a brownie wrapped inside a croissant. The family grows produce in its own garden for the kitchen. The venue also hosts live music and performance art.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the sourdough baking course, where several describe a fun, interactive session led by the course leaders, with lunch provided and a finished loaf, dough for a second and a starter to take home. Close behind is the home-baked sourdough in the cafe itself, described as soft and chewy, including sourdough buns with hummus and jalapenos. The cheesecake, including a Basque version, is called delicious, and the pizza is called fresh and tasty, though one reviewer found it a bit light on jalapenos. Others mention great coffee, a brownie wrapped inside a croissant and a smashing pain au chocolat. Reviewers describe friendly, knowledgeable staff, generous portions, a welcoming, homely feel and a dog friendly room, with live music and performance art now and then. The recurring drawbacks are practical: one finds parking tricky nearby, another notes a very steep walk up, and a weekend visitor found it heaving and did not want to hog a table. One reviewer left with a brownie croissant the counter staff had talked them into.

“Lovely small bakery with great coffee, fab sour dough and other eats. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. It's a really good place to meet and chat with friends. The only issue I've had is parking, as it can be tricky to find a space nearby. I've had smashing pain au Chocolat and cheesecake, coffees and sourdough buns with hummus and jalapenos. 😋”

“Pizza was fresh and the sourdough was soft and chewy. Probably has great vibes when a bit busier with more students about, sometimes has live music. Basque cheesecake was delicious”

“The Deli was quite busy and given it's a liitle walk away from the town centre and mid afternoon, that tells a story. We knew of it through a friend who'd played a gig there (they put performance art on too) so thought we'd give it a go. Highly recommended! Food was excellent, based around home-baked sourdough. Coffee was wonderful, sevice was great.”

“I attended the sourdough baking class recently and was so impressed by the knowledge of the course leader. The atmosphere was very welcoming and we were offered drinks on arrival as well a very tasty lunch. The teacher takes you through each step and the class is very interactive. For anyone who is interested in sourdough baking or a fun activity to do with a friend or partner I would say it is well worth it. You even get to bring home a baked sourdough loaf, the dough for another and your own starter to practice at home.”

“Amazing place, what a gem 🥰 Visited last night for pizza which was fantastic, they were a bit light on the jalapenos but everything wlse was perfect. Noticed they had wifi so thought Id go back today to get a coffee and a brownie I'd not had space for last night - it was heaving, which i guess i should have expected. The friendly behond the counter instead convinced me to purchase another item - a brownie wrapped inside a crossiant - oh my, it was to die for. So good. Needless to say, eith how busy it was I didnt want to hog a table to work from - maybe I will try again on a weekday rather than weekend as the sandwiches all looked amazing too 🥰 They are also dog friendly which is a bonus and creates a lovely homely feel.”
