Customer Review Summary

Diners consistently single out the local lamb, duck, and steak as standout dishes, with many also praising the Pork Belly starter and the Gnocchi with truffle oil and salad. The warm, family-run atmosphere and exceptional service are repeatedly highlighted, including thoughtful touches like tailored menus for dietary needs and wine tastings before ordering. Several note the cosy, alpine feel of the space and the excellent selection of local ciders, ales, and spirits. A few mention longer waits during busy nights, with one citing a 45-minute gap between order and starter on a full house evening. One reviewer describes receiving a special amuse-bouche as a surprise before their main.

Fantastic bar and restaurant, from the moment we walked through the door we were welcomed by the amazing Paul and Carol and their front of house team. Local ciders, ales and spirits celebrating everything that is great about Exmoor. We had dinner on Saturday evening, the food and service was excellent, a wide choice across the menu, if you are in the area it is a must stop and I would suggest book ahead for dinner especially Friday and a Saturday nights.

We got recommended this place as we were staying local. Wow, what a lovely time we all had and a great way to celebrate Tom's birthday. Tom had the Pork Belly to start which was excellent. We then had the local lamb and duck mains, which …

I have been visiting woods for over 20 years (it was one of the reasons I moved to Dulverton for 2 years 07-09). We now live some 120 miles away but still visit a few times a year on route to Cornwall. I have given it 5 stars across the …

Have only had the starters yet but already know we would make a big trip just to come again. Update: we've made a trip 3 times now- 66 miles from home. This time we told them in advance that one of us couldn't have mustard, and on arrival a special menu had been prepared with alternate dishes that weren't on anyone else's menu- salmon, quails eggs, and caviar for example.

Where to begin on this incredible place… We had the absolute pleasure of dining here last night, and I can confidently say it was one of the best meals we’ve had in a very long time. From the moment I called at 2pm on the day—fully expecting to be turned away as they were fully booked—the warmth of this place shone through. The lovely lady on the phone went out of her way to squeeze us in, and that kindness set the tone for the entire evening. The restaurant itself has a charming alpine, almost ski chalet feel—cosy, inviting, and clearly family-run with love. There’s a genuine warmth to the atmosphere that makes you feel like a welcomed guest rather than just another table. The service? Exceptional. The staff went above and beyond in every way, adding small thoughtful gestures that truly elevated the experience. I wasn’t sure about which wine to go for, and instead of the usual vague advice, they actually brought over a bottle so I could sample before committing to a glass—something you rarely see these days. And then… the food. Where do I even begin? I ordered the steak, which was cooked to absolute perfection—tender, flavourful, and beautifully presented. My partner had the lamb, and we both fell into that rare silence that only comes when food is that good. Every bite was savoured, and we barely spoke until our plates were empty. It’s rare to find a place that hits every note—warm hospitality, authentic atmosphere, top-tier service, and food that stays with you long after the meal is over. Couldn’t recommend this restaurant more. We already can’t wait to return.

How this listing is sourced

Where the data comes from
Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
How it stays current
Every listing is re-checked on a recurring crawl, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
How it is ranked
Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
