About Toby Carvery

Toby Carvery is a carvery on Yarm Rd in Darlington, where the meat is carved to order and the vegetables are unlimited. An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet runs alongside the carvery, so the kitchen serves both a morning meal and a roast. The roast comes with Yorkshire pudding and pork crackling, and the carvery also holds roast potatoes, gravy and stuffing. A turkey dinner with all the trimmings is on the menu, and a larger meat portion is available for an extra charge. Tables can be booked online. Walk-ins without a booking may be asked to wait for a table, and a bar area is there for guests to wait in.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the carvery roast itself, with turkey dinners, pork crackling, leek and potato slices and mash all named as highlights, and one praising a Yorkshire pudding and fluffy roast potatoes. Close behind, several describe friendly, helpful staff who stayed calm and accommodating when the restaurant was busy, and one reviewer had a Christmas day meal where dietary needs were arranged beforehand. The caveats are mostly about portions and consistency. One reviewer says the meat portions were cut down and that the large size would be normal elsewhere, while another found the roasties a bit hard and received a fatty piece of meat. The breakfast buffet draws the sharpest complaints: lukewarm coffee, soggy or overdone bacon, no eggs or juice available, a wait to be served at the bar, and separate charges when children wanted cereal and a little cooked breakfast. Some also mention a slow start to service, though staff apologised for the delay, and one reviewer waited for a table without a booking and did not mind the short wait.

“We visited to have breakfast with my parents, who had stayed at the travelodge the night before. Lady on the till was not very welcoming. Coffee and milk was low, had to wait for it to be restocked. Bacon was rather soggy. Kids wanted cereal and a little bit of cooked breakfast, both separate charges.”

“Service when first went in was bit slow though staff pleasant enough and apologised for delay. Food was mostly great. Roasties bit hard and we seemed to get a fatty bit of meat but other than that food was lovely”
  • Sally Bennison
“Booked online but only 40 mins before turning up. The staff, especially Toni, were great and, although there were people turning up all the time, she didn’t get flustered and was lovely and accommodating to everyone. Food was good, as expected at a Toby.”

“If i could give this Toby a 10/10 i would. The best Toby Carvery in the UK!!! In recent years ive travelled all over the country with my work and every few weeks, i seek out a Toby Carvery. A reoccurring criticism of most tobys is usually the roast potatoes, arent actually roasted, they just look brown Not here! these were perfectly fluffy, amazingly roasted potatoes. And it doesnt stop there....more hugely stand out things about this carvery. Its also the prettiest most modern carvery ive seen. But more imporantly, the biggest, sexiest looking, most perfectly cooked yorkshire pudding ive ever had in my life!!! Haaa! (I asked, gratitude goes to Ashley & Aliyah for these miracle creations! ) And the staff, so many carverys -the chefs are really miserable, well Ashley was chatty, & genuinly personable not just with me but with other guests. I heard him with a family. Plus, Hayley was a lovely smiley superstar. After the longest of days on a uk tour. This was such a refreshing experience Well done Darlington! You made my week. You are oficially the best toby carvery in the uk (according to me!) Xxx”

“Two turkey dinner carvery with all the trimmings. A very good sized portion of meat and plenty of vegetables to choose from. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I think they deserve to have a service charge put onto the bill as they all work hard.”
