About Thai Emerald Cirencester

Thai Emerald Cirencester is a Thai restaurant in Cirencester at 36 Castle St, where hand-carved teak furniture and wood carvings fill the tables, chairs and walls. Traditional Thai water features add to the theme, and the decor continues across both floors, down to the marble sink in the toilets. The à la carte menu is large, with Thai red curry, pad Thai and Chicken Massaman among the dishes. Sizzling plates such as Kai Lao Daeng arrive on traditional heated plates. Seafood and duck specials sit alongside a list of drinks and sweets, and vegetarian options appear on the menu.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the authentic, flavourful Thai cooking, with the Chicken Massaman, the sizzling Kai Lao Daeng on heated plates, Thai red curry and pad Thai named as highlights. Close behind is the carved-wood decor, which several describe as stunning and extend to the upstairs and even the toilets. Service is repeatedly called friendly, polite and quick, with starters arriving fast. Vegetarians and diners who avoid spice say the large menu gave them plenty of choice, and one notes it was hard to narrow down. Large portions and a conversation-friendly noise level also come up. Some reviews are less positive. One takeaway buyer found the soup salty and watery, with undercooked prawns and mushrooms, and a dine-in reviewer found the staff unfriendly, as if pushing for more drinks or food. Return visitors from London note the restaurant staying fairly full on a week night, and one reviewer loved the cups with elephant-trunk handles.

“We came here to celebrate my partner’s birthday and had a lovely time. The food was delicious, we had the Chicken Massaman and the sizzling Kai Lao Daeng with jasmine rice and they were both full of flavour, served on traditional heated plates. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive, welcoming and polite. Our drinks and food were both served in a timely manner. The decor inside is beautiful, with hand-carved artworks on the walls, tables and chairs which gave an authentic atmosphere. I loved that it wasn’t too loud in there, with the background music at an enjoyable level, we were still able to enjoy conversation. 10/10 we would love to come back!”

“At its core, truly brilliant food is all about contrast and balance. It’s that perfect tension where opposing elements, like the rich, heavy creaminess of a sauce and the sharp, clean lift of citrus or fresh herbs—come together to elevate one another rather than fight for dominance. When a kitchen gets that right, it stops being just fuel and becomes an experience. You aren't just tasting "salt" or "heat"; you're tasting layers of distinct flavours that hit your palate at different times. It's the difference between a dish that's just flatly hot and one where the spice actually carries the aroma of the ingredients forward. Highly recommend.”

“We've eaten at Thai Emerald about 4 times now having travelled down from London, and have tried a number of different dishes. Every dining experience here has been excellent. The food is authentic (we've been to Thailand), and the service and ambience make for a great night out. The fact that you can go there on a week night and the restaurant will still be pretty full says it all. Well done Thai Emerald. See you again soon”

“Incredible traditional Thai food served here. My partner & I shared a Thai red curry & pad Thai it was the best Thai food we’ve had in a long time. Our food was served quick, nice ambiance and decor. Staff were polite and welcoming. Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re in or around Cirencester.”

“I never had such a bad food anywhere in the world. I went to Cirencester for work from London. Stayed in hotel. While walking back from work to hotel, I picked up a soup from this place. Planned to go back for dinner. This is what they packed!!! Too much salty water with some smell of turmeric or god knows what!! 3 prawns and some mushrooms not cooked properly. Don't go by their average rating. Whatever you buy will be a waste.”
