About O-Tokuda

O-Tokuda is a Japanese restaurant in Chesterfield that has been open since 2008, serving all-you-can-eat Japanese and Chinese-style dishes cooked fresh to order. Guests order from the menu, and food comes to the table in rounds, with staff checking whether people want more food or drinks. Sushi sits alongside Chinese-style plates such as salt & pepper ribs and prawn toast. Complimentary prawn crackers arrive when diners are seated. Desserts, sorbets among them, are separate from the all-you-can-eat menu. The bar offers a cocktail menu, Japanese beer, Prosecco and mocktails. Gluten-free soy sauce and vegan options are available, and an a la carte menu runs alongside the all-you-can-eat one. Reservations are required, and paying in cash takes 10% off.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come for the all you can eat menu, ordering round by round and having dishes cooked fresh and brought to the table, with the sushi and maki singled out for tasty fillings. Close behind are the desserts, especially the sorbets, plus Japanese beer, an espresso martini and mocktails. Diners also mention gluten-free soy sauce, vegan options and a garlic intolerance being catered to. Service is repeatedly called friendly and quick, though one reviewer found it a little slow before the food started arriving, and was asked to come back later because of a busy start. The sharpest criticism concerns authenticity and variety. One reviewer says the menu leans on westernised Chinese staples such as sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls, salt and pepper ribs, satay skewers and prawn toast, with little resembling Japanese cooking. Another, a returning visitor, was told grilled salmon and skewers were unavailable and found less variety and lower quality than on an earlier visit. Happier diners close on staff regularly asking whether the table wants more food or drinks.

“O-Tokuda: The "Authentic" Japanese Experience (Direct from China) Well faked, Mr. Ming and Wong (actual owners of this business). The massive "ようこそ" painted on the front sign is your first dead giveaway—a greeting no restaurant in Japan would display. The food hygiene sticker of 2 out of 5 by the entrance is overly generous. If you are craving the unmistakable flavours of authentic Japanese food... keep looking! But if you want a massive plate of sweet and sour chicken served under the guise of "traditional cuisine," step right in. Enjoy "Japanese" classics like spring rolls, fried wonton, salt & pepper ribs and satay skewers, brought to your table by an "authentic Japanese" front-of-house team speaking with unmistakable Cantonese accents. Yet another 'proud, independent' establishment pretending to be Japanese to mark up prices. Explore a small selection of sushi, sashimi, and... well, mostly westernised Chinese buffet staples, served all-you-can-eat style. Because nothing says traditional Japanese culinary heritage quite like a hot display full of prawn toast. Why not just be honest and call it 'Chinese' or 'pan Asian' rather than fooling the public? Pick from the menu and try food you will never, ever find in any izakaya in Japan! Update to the reply : thanks for the explanation. I would have had more respect if you in fact just call it what it is :Pan Asian or Chinese. The fact that you emphasised 'Japanese' yet have no actual Japanese staff on site and barely any dishes that remotely resemble Japanese cuisine, you're stlll nothing but a deceitful business and deserve to be exposed. 'History' is a poor excuse for false advertising when you cannot remain current with your outrageous claims to be 'authentic''. You have enough online presence clearly so you haven't 'forgotten' to update description; you chose to keep deceiving. You are NOT Japanese (but clearly not much pride and feel the need to imitate other ethnicities) and never involved in the original 100% so-called 'Japanese' business (if your claim is real, which is also doubtful). Good luck to your greedy business model. I hope people start to see through your lies.”

“Absolutely delicious food. Everything is freshly cooked for you and you can have as much as you want on the all you can eat option. The maki had a good amount of filling that you could taste (not like Yo!). The portions are just right, allowing for minimal wastage if you dislike something and you can order more if you do like it. Paying by cash? They'll give you 10% off 😁. The food quality is far superior to Cosmo and you don't have people breathing all over your food. The staff were lovely and very attentive. You weren't left waiting. I would definitely visit again 😁.”

“We’ve been to Otakuda so many times now and it never disappoints. The all-you-can-eat menu has loads of choice and everything we’ve tried has always been fresh and delicious. There are plenty of gluten-free options available too, including gluten-free soy sauce, which makes such a difference. We’ve tried other all-you-can-eat sushi restaurants and regular sushi places in Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds, and for the quality/price - we still always end up comparing it to Otakuda. The staff are always lovely, service is really quick and the food is delicious at a great price. We’ll definitely keep coming back!”

“Visited with my partner on Wednesday 12th August 2026. Both had an awesome experience here. Food was amazing. Great vegan options and I also have a garlic intolerance which they catered to. Couldn't fault the place, excellent service and lovely staff. We'll definitely be returning!”
