Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the haddock or cod and chips for their huge portions, with one calling the batter light and crisp and the chips beautifully cooked. One finds the haddock bland. The recurring complaint is waiting: collection quoted at 20 minutes took over an hour for one reviewer, and another describes standing in the shop for 30 minutes after a phone order.

“We decided to try Ruben’s Fish & Chips after seeing so many recommendations online, including Kyle vs Food, who was absolutely raving about the place. It also appears to have recently picked up awards for the quality of its food, and the reviews certainly gave us high expectations. There were even reports of queues out the door. We ordered the large haddock and chips and collected them, then sat in the car park outside to eat them while they were still fresh. The batter was excellent. It was light, crisp, had a lovely flavour and wasn’t overly greasy. The haddock itself was a really generous size and was cooked very well — moist and certainly not overcooked. Unfortunately, that’s where our disappointment came in. Although the fish was cooked perfectly and the portion was massive, the actual haddock had very little flavour. It was incredibly bland. For us, that really let an otherwise excellent portion of fish down. The chips, however, were absolutely beautiful. They were really well cooked, with exactly the sort of texture and flavour you want from proper fish and chips. We genuinely couldn’t fault them. So, overall, there was a lot to like: fantastic batter, a huge portion of perfectly cooked fish and excellent chips. But the lack of flavour in the haddock itself was a real let-down, especially given all the hype and the very high expectations created by the reviews. The chips and batter were superb, but for us the fish needs more flavour to justify the level of praise Ruben’s is currently receiving. Maybe we caught it on an off day, because judging by the queues and the overwhelmingly positive reviews, plenty of people clearly think it’s outstanding.”

“Last visit. Telephone order for as had approx 30 minutes wait on last two visits, told about 15 minutes, arrived on time and stood in the shop for...30 minutes. Food good but 45 minutes far too long to wait for just fish and chips”

“Had an absolutely fantastic meal. Regular cod & chip - god it was huge - cannot imagine how many people the "jumbo" would feed. I can barely walk I'm so full. Keep up the good work, & ill definitely be back when I'm in the area. Thanks again guys n gals.”

“One of the worst I've been to. Waited nearly an hour for food, think the forgot about us, was about to get a refund to be honest. They no concept of a que or timing. Saw several people order after me and leave. They don't ask a name, give a number, raffle ticket. Nothing at all. Worst thing was the food was just meh, below average, didn't ask us about seasoning just packed it up, no forks. No apology, nothing. They need a serious re think about the kitchen timings. Never going back, just not worth it at all.”
