Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the fish and chips, with several calling it one of the best they have had, praising haddock and plaice that arrived fresh and hot under a crispy, light batter that did not separate from the fish. The curry sauce is the close second, called delicious and impressive, with mushy peas and chicken balls and chips also getting mentions. Portions are described as generous and filling, and a few note the staff offering free top ups of chips. Service is mostly called friendly, fast and welcoming, and the window seating with a river view and a draught pint or Hawkstone alongside the meal draw praise. The recurring caveats are small but specific. One party was refused a table swap twice after sitting in a seat made too hot by sunlight, and was only moved once no other customers were waiting. Another had to ask for different cutlery because the pieces in the pot were not clean, and found the seating worn. One reviewer's family of four ate plaice and chips with sides, and they suggest pre-ordering for collection.

“Amazing food we had at The chip shed Bourton on the water. We got seated immediately and the staff were friendly and prompt with their service. My girlfriend had chicken balls and chips. Which was so filling she couldn't finish it . And I had fish and chips which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the best meals I've had for a long time. Which was also nice, the staff would offer us more chips top up for free . You can order lager here also . Would definitely recommend the chip shed for a night filling meal with no hassles”

“It’s one of the best fish and chips I ever had. The batter didn’t separate from the fish, and the fish was delicious. The curry sauce was also impressive. The only issue we had was with the seat arrangement - the two ladies were not particularly friendly nor helpful when we just sat down and found the seat too hot because of sunlight and asked if we can swap to a table that just became available. They declined our requests twice saying other customers were waiting. Only when there was no more customers coming in they let us to swap. I would look to go back again for the great food and hope the service will be better next time.”

“Absolutely fantastic experience at The Chip Shed in Bourton-on-the-Water. The food was fresh, hot, beautifully cooked, and exactly what you want from a proper fish and chip shop. The portions were generous too - definitely not one of those places where you leave wondering whether dinner was just the warm-up. The fish was excellent, the chips were spot on, and everything arrived piping hot. We came in hungry and left in that very specific state where you know you probably shouldn’t eat another chip… but somehow you still do. A special mention has to go to our waiter, Tom, who was amazing from start to finish. Friendly, attentive, polite, and genuinely brilliant at what he does. He looked after us really well, had a great personality, and somehow managed to appear exactly when we needed something without hovering around like an NPC waiting for the next quest, waiting to press A on them. Honestly, Tom deserves a pay rise, a promotion, or at the very least unlimited chips and sauces. The whole place had a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, and when you combine really good food with genuinely excellent service, it makes such a difference. Would definitely recommend The Chip Shed to anyone visiting Bourton-on-the-Water - even just to visit Tom. And secondly, the great fish, great chips, great atmosphere. Five stars - although Tom may have earned about three of them himself. 😂”

“Our tour guide Nigel from Go Tours recommended this place, and were absolutely spot on! One of the best fish and chips I’ve had. Sitting by the window, enjoying the river view and watching people have picnics, was the icing on the cake. Definitely recommend checking out the Chip Shed! Also. Hawkstone or any beer along with it is amazing! Special thanks to Ella for a great service!”

“We had a fantastic experience at The Chip Shed. The food was really tasty, and the portion sizes were definitely worth the money. I had the haddock, which was a great size and cooked perfectly, and the curry sauce was absolutely delicious. What really made our visit special was the customer service. From the moment we arrived until we left, the staff were warm, welcoming, and incredibly kind. A special shout-out to Maria, who looked after us so well and made us feel genuinely valued as customers. We brought family over from Malaysia to visit the area, and stopping at The Chip Shed was a great treat for them. The food, atmosphere, and service all exceeded expectations. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!”
