Customer Review Summary
The recurring complaint is value. Several regulars report that the large bowl has shrunk while the price stayed the same, and one who raised it in store several times got only vague answers. Another found a veg bowl half full despite paying extra for seasonal vegetables, which turned out to be a little more onion and pepper. Service draws mixed comments, with one reviewer meeting rude staff twice when asking about the menu. A late visit found no pinto beans, rice or lettuce and a warm coke, with the chorizo added only after the diner asked.

“Tortilla in Cardiff on chippy lane is a hidden gem of a lunch spot! Staff are lovely and kind to explain all of the available options to add in to my burrito (including vegetarian options!) and the tortilla chips are extra crisp and salty (just what I like!) Special thank you to Caitlin (I believe this was her name?!) do being so patient with my indecisiveness about the salsa options!! Will be returning very soon :))”

“Polite staff, but no pinto beans, tomato/Mexican rice, or lettuce. Also no chorizo until I asked for them to add it. I then asked for a coke which was basically warm. Based off today, if you're thinking of a late snack or meal, best avoid this place.”

“Been three times because the food is very tasty and have taken new people with me each time, however, on two occasions I’ve be confronted with quite rude staff when asking them simple questions about the menu, which really was quite surprising considering they know the menu better than me, this left a bad taste in my mouth- wont be back I’m afraid. Service is just as important as the quality of food.”

“I usually enjoy the food from this Mexican restaurant, but today I fancied something a bit lighter and so I chose their “Veg Bowl”. (What could possibly go wrong?) Their (Deliveroo) menu promised a bowl full of different vegetables, including “SEASONAL vegetables“, and so I paid extra and ordered the “large” version, and opted for “extra SEASONAL egetables” (whatever THEY were. I only identified a smidgen of extra onion and a little bit of extra sliced pepper as the “seasonal vegetables”. (I didn’t realise that onions and peppers were particularly “in season” in April. You couldn’t make it up!) (Imagine walking into a veg shop and asking for “a bag of seasonal vegetables” and the assistant just handing you a pack of onions! The vegetables that ARE in season right now include: asparagus; spring greens; chard; radishes; morel mushrooms; Mexican greens; and kale.) As I stared forlornly at this £11.10 dish the word “pathetic” instantly sprang to mind - followed by the word “scammed!“. How can a restaurant that serves generally good food with reasonable portions be happy palming customers off with under-portioned, lack-lustre dishes like this? Basically, what I received was a half-full bowl of disappointment - and for £11.10! (please see photo. And, no, I haven’t adjusted it, eaten from it or given it time to settle). For £4 more I could’ve enjoyed their “Protein Bowl”, for example, which is packed full of delicious ingredients and boasts double protein. This difference in pricing does not make any sense at all. I urge the owner to pause polishing his/her Bentley for a minute and meditate deeply on all the above. I always end up abandoning restaurants that insult me with stingy portions, while still charging a premium, and I am at a loss as to how on earth this ill-judged strategy is good for continued business, especially in a market that is increasingly becoming a hospitality graveyard of failed restaurants. I’ll keep ordering as a regular customer for now, but if I risk choosing their veg bowl again and it turns out to be a half-filled bowl of sadness, then I will say bye-bye to Tortilla for good (which is not going to pay the staff’s wages!). I look forward to a proper, professional and respectful reply, and a full explanation below from the manager - and a reassurance me that things will change. If there is no reply forthcoming then I will automatically assume that this eatery does not care enough about keeping regular customers - the lifeblood of any business.”
