About Golden City

On Risbygate St in Bury Saint Edmunds, Golden City is a Chinese restaurant at number 107 with table service in the dining room. Its all-you-can-eat buffet is cooked fresh to order rather than served from a self-service line, so diners can keep ordering dishes from the kitchen. Some tables receive the buffet menu alongside the main menu. Honey beef and sweet and sour chicken are on that main menu, and the meat spring rolls are cooked fresh and brought to the table. Bookings are taken, and the dining room plays no background music.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the buffet, where each dish is cooked fresh to order rather than self-service, with a meat spring roll brought fresh to the table drawing particular praise. Close behind, several describe tasty, decent food, friendly staff, and a delivery that arrived to a happy birthday takeaway. The caveats carry real weight. One diner found the honey beef dry and discolored and warns the chilies can be very hot, while another called the noodles greasy, the sweet and sour chicken thickly battered and dry, and a curry sauce never arrived. Service draws the sharpest complaints: one reviewer describes a waitress who is always miserable, and a couple left after waiting with no drink or food order taken while a later couple was served. A family who booked with two high chairs and a pushchair was seated at a table for four, and left after about twenty minutes.

“Been a few times to dine inside. It’s a very average Chinese restaurant, doesn’t feel clean, but food is usually good enough. The biggest downside is the lady/waitress that works there who is always miserable. It’s as if she doesn’t like to serve people. She needs to learn hospitality and customer service or they should assign someone else the job because she’s doing a disservice to one of the very few dine-in Chinese restaurants in Bury.”

“Takeaways and delivery available to surrounding villages. All you can eat Great quality buffet off the menu where each dish is cooked fresh to order, rather than self service!”

“Booked a table on Tuesday for the following Sunday for four adults, two high chairs and space for a pushchair — plenty of notice, you’d think… We arrived to be greeted with: “Table booked for four adults and two high chairs? We only have one… and it’s currently in use.” Slightly surprising given that exact information was shared when we booked nearly a week earlier. Undeterred, we were then shown to a table for four. Just four. No space for high chairs, no space for a pushchair, and barely space for the four actual adults. At one point the baby was so close to the next table I thought we might have to ask them to add him to their bill. To be fair, the other customers were lovely and tried to help us shuffle things around, even offering to swap tables when they sat a couple who came in after us, in a larger space than the 7 of us were given. The staff… didn’t once offer to help in any way and were constantly telling us they were fully booked… WE BOOKED! The restaurants “atmosphere”, apparently means no music at all. Lovely idea, except it meant every slightly awkward conversation we were having with the staff happened in complete silence while the entire restaurant paused to listen. Frankly I can’t blame them, it was turning into a bit of a live comedy show trying to watch us pack ourselves in like sardines in a can. After about 20 minutes of feeling like we’d accidentally gatecrashed a dinner party we weren’t invited to, we decided to leave. If we’d just wandered in off the street I’d completely understand, but booking nearly a week in advance and specifically mentioning two high chairs and a pushchair does make you think someone might have checked whether that was physically possible. A quick “sorry, we can’t accommodate that” at the time of booking would have saved everyone the dinner time theatre.”

“We booked for 6.30 on a Sunday for 2 people. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. The waitress barely spoke and just pointed to our table. We didn't want the buffet, but it was the only menu they gave us, and then we're unhelpful when we asked if we could choose from the main menu, after about 25 minutes, we had not been asked if we wanted to order a drink, let alone food, yet served another couple who arrived after us! I cannot leave a review regarding the food, as we put our coats on and left. Would NOT recommend 😕”
