About The Mayan
The Mayan is a modern Mexican restaurant and mezcal bar at 170 Wharfside St in Birmingham, with canal views from the dining room. The interior is dark and gold, a design inspired by the Mayan empire, so the room makes the theme part of the visit. On the food menu, tacos and steak sit among the mains, and churros appear on the dessert list. The bar pours mezcal and cocktails to go with the meal. Bottomless brunch is offered for those who want a longer daytime sitting. A Tulum night brings dancers to the restaurant, and a DJ plays music.

Customer Review Summary
Tacos come up most often, with the chicken tacos called light and smoky, and the steak close behind, described as full of flavour and cooked exactly as wanted. Churros, cocktails, and a Tulum night with dancers are also singled out, and one diner mentions a DJ playing music. Servers earn repeated praise for recommending cocktails and menu items, checking in often without hovering, and making birthdays and a corporate team event feel looked after. The main caveat comes from one anniversary dinner where the food arrived very late after an order mix-up. That reviewer found the guacamole portion tiny, disliked the sauce with the beef croquettes, found the lamb shank a little fatty, and felt the quality and portions did not justify the bill. Another reviewer was not keen on the sea bass with chickpeas. Even so, the late meal ended with two complimentary drinks and a small chocolate tart for the anniversary.

“We came to The Mayan for our first wedding anniversary after my mum kindly gave us a gift card to enjoy a special dinner here. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing and not what I had hoped for. We arrived at 6:15pm, sat down and ordered all of the food together, but it wasn’t until around 7:30pm that our avocado appetiser arrived. The waitress apologised and explained that there had been a mix-up with our order. By this point I was extremely hungry and frustrated, and we then had to wait another 10 minutes or so for the rest of our food. I appreciate that mistakes happen, and the staff were apologetic, but the long wait really affected the mood of what was supposed to be a special anniversary evening. The food itself was a mixed experience. The guacamole was average and the portion was only around two tablespoons. The chicken tacos were definitely the highlight and had a lovely light, smoky flavour. The lamb shank was nice and tender, although a little fatty. I wasn’t keen on the sauce served with the beef croquettes as there was a particular spice/flavour in it that I personally didn’t enjoy. The truffle fries were okay, and the churros were good, although again the portion was quite small. Our meal came to around £100, and unfortunately I didn’t feel the quality, portion sizes or overall experience justified the price. I understand this is positioned as fine dining, but for me the food simply wasn’t exceptional enough for the price. I also personally didn’t find the restaurant had the ambience I expected. I do appreciate the staff offering two complimentary drinks because of the delay, although I didn’t enjoy the drink recommended to me and returned it. At the end of the meal we were asked if we were celebrating anything, and when I mentioned our anniversary they brought us a small chocolate tart, which was a thoughtful gesture and appreciated. Overall, the staff were apologetic and there were some good dishes, particularly the chicken tacos, but between the very long wait, mixed food, small portions and the price, I left disappointed. Sadly, it put a dampener on our anniversary evening and I wouldn’t return.”

“Milly was an amazing waitress. She recommended some great cocktails and checked on us frequently but also allowed us to chat and enjoy. She also was chatty and friendly and made us feel very comfortable. She made our experience extra special. We had the tacos and soup would highly recommend”

The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we were well looked after throughout. The manager in particular went above and beyond—far from your typical experience—and truly helped make my daughter’s birthday feel special.A big thank you to all the staff for being so amazing and making us feel genuinely welcome.
