About Bilal Sweets
Bilal Sweets is a deli at 218 Alum Rock Rd in Birmingham, serving Asian mithai and savoury snacks from a front display. Katlama, a pastry with spiced meat filling, sits on the savoury side alongside samosas and pakoras. The sweets include gulab jamun, with other mithai alongside it, so one counter covers both a savoury snack and a box of sweets. Halwa puri is on the menu for a fuller meal. Some items come fresh from the back of the shop to the display.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the katlama, praised for crisp, thin pastry and a spiced meat filling with onions and a little fresh chilli. Veg and chicken pakoras come close behind, described as hot, fresh and crispy outside, soft and spicy inside. Mithai, including gulab jamun, barfi, ras malai, kheer and namak paras, also earns praise, and several describe friendly, polite service and good prices. A few note the kheer or mithai was occasionally off or not made as well as usual, so one suggests checking the kheer is fresh. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the chaat's chickpeas hard, the sauce like cheap ketchup, and the veg samosa short on filling, and two others call the shami kebabs a letdown. One halwa puri order had salty channa gravy and cold halwa. One reviewer reports finding plastic cling film and a long thin bone in samosas given to their children. The 3-star reviewer still credits a server who fetched a fresh katlama and samosa from the back without being asked.

“Katlama and veg pakora was delicious, hot and fresh BUT…. The veg samosa filling was tasty but it was let down by a small filling to pastry ratio. Eg if you hold up the samosa to light yo will see the not so generous filling portion. The chaat was a huge let down, the chickpeas were still hard and so small? What type of chickpeas were they using? The sauce tasted like cheap ketchup, not tasty at all there was no chaat masala, NOTHING. The kebab was also lacking in flavour which was a shame. So half of my order was great the other half was a let HUGE down. Disappointed as I would expect better from an established as old as Bilals. The man who served us chose to get the fresh Katlama and samosa from the back without having to ask him, great gesture from him. But the chaat and shami /chapli was from the front display and disappointing. The katlama was the reason I gave them 3 stars otherwise much lower.”

“Always busy only come here for katlama pastry, haven't tried any of their other item to be honest. But this shop always busy so they must be doing something right with their sweet food and pastry. Prices are very good👍🏾”
