About The Winking Owl, Craft Ale Pub & Bar
The Winking Owl, Craft Ale Pub & Bar is a pub in Aviemore on Grampian Rd, open daily. Its beer garden looks over the Cairngorms, and pizza menus from the neighbouring El Diego takeaway sit on the tables. Local Cairngorm Wildcat Ale is on tap alongside real ale. The kitchen serves haggis, neeps and tatties with pepper sauce, as well as steak pie and chips, and allergen information is laid out clearly on the menu. Wednesdays bring an advertised steak night, and live music plays at the weekend. Tables can be booked in advance on the website, and walk-ins are also seated, though it can be busy. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Haggis is the dish reviewers return to most, served with tatties and a pepper sauce in one account, and with a whisky sauce that another reviewer says they will be thinking about for weeks. Close behind are the Cullen Skink and a steak pie with chips, while a local Cairngorm Wildcat Ale on tap and a beer garden with mountain views draw praise on the drinks side. Several describe arriving without a booking and being found a table quickly by friendly staff, though one notes it was busy and suggests booking. Reviewers also single out the allergen layout of the menu and live music at weekends. The criticisms are small: one reviewer found the fish came with underfried chips, another says it gets a little hot inside in summer, and one says the drinks are not cheap. Staff made a bowl of chicken, parsnips and carrots for one reviewer's dog, and another describes the team finding a dropped wallet, keeping it in the office and arranging a courier collection.

“Had a great experience here! The food was good, the bar had a fantastic atmosphere and the live music made the evening even better. The staff really added to the friendly and welcoming vibe. A special thank you to the team for going above and beyond after I accidentally dropped my wallet there. When I got in touch, I was relieved to hear that they had found it and kept it safe in the office. A huge shoutout to Karen, who was incredibly helpful in coordinating a courier collection and made sure my wallet was securely packed and safely handed over to the delivery driver. Really appreciate the care and effort! Will definitely visit again when back in Aviemore :)”

“Drinks review of the Winking Owl Bothy Bar beer garden. Enjoyed drinks in the lovely beer garden, along with takeaway pizza from El Diego, which is situated next to the beer garden – there are pizza menus on all the outside tables. The Bothy Bar had local Cairngorm Wildcat Ale on tap when we visited – would recommend this! The drinks aren't cheap (half pints of local ale over £3) but it's a lovely relaxing place to have a nice drink, pizza, and enjoy the scenery.”

“Absolutely beautiful place, superb food, with stunning views over the Cairgorms Mountains. Beautiful home made food, cracking real ale, lovely relaxing atmosphere. And the Haggis, Keeps and Tatties, with pepper sauce, is just a stroke of genius... so much do, I had it twice, judge all you want, it was that fantastic”

“Arrived without a booking and pushed for time. Beverley was amazing, gave me a table within 20 mins, sent me to the bar to relax with a drink beforehand and put my food order through quickly so I wasn’t rushed eating. Steak pie and chips was epic! Excellent service”
