About The Bowling Green Steakhouse

The Bowling Green Steakhouse is a steak house on North Ave in Ashbourne, with a dining room and a separate bar end where dogs are allowed. The menu centres on steak and ribeye, and the scoop fries come topped with cheese, haggis and black pudding, which gives the kitchen a distinctly Scottish-leaning side dish. Sticky beef in teriyaki sauce works as a starter or a plate to share, and portions run large, so tables often split starters and sides. Food usually takes a while to come out. Groups of 8 or 10 can be seated together.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the steak, from a ribeye to a steak and blue cheese pizza, with the Sunday roast beef close behind. Reviewers also single out the sticky beef starter, the scoop chips (one with cheese, haggis and black pudding), the chicken balmoral, dauphinoise potatoes, and puddings like sticky toffee and creme brulee. Portions are repeatedly described as huge, and several split starters and sides instead of ordering mains. Staff are called friendly and attentive even when the place is full, and one waitress brought out a birthday cake singing after a candle request. The recurring caveat is pace: several mention food taking longer than a standard pub, and one found the service a bit slow with not much atmosphere. That same reviewer had a roast beef that arrived too pink. Others read the wait as a sign of fresh cooking. One party of ten with four children cleared nearly every plate.

“Anniversary meal to celebrate. We dropped in yesterday after recommendations from couple of Ashbourne locals and we're not left disappointed. The food was super, a ribeye and a Sunday roast beef. Plenty to go at without being OTT. It took longer to come than your standard pub but I saw that as a good thing as the food was clearly cooked fresh and to high standard. We shared a creme brulee which was equally enjoyable. Staff were nice and friendly and attentive despite the place being full and busy. Definitely pop in again for food or drink when the chance arises in Ashbourne again”

“We walked in without a reservation on a Sunday late afternoon with our dog. We got seated and served in the bar. It was quiet, comfortable and the food was beautiful. Fresh, hot and yummy. Definitely recommend, a slight wait for food but nothing to worry about.”

“The food was really nicely cooked. The pie was excellent so tasty. The scoop chips with cheese, haggis, black pudding was great massive portion. Everything we ate was great. Service was top notch as well. Was reasonably priced as well.”

“First time visit, we have never noticed the pub before in our last few visits to Ashbourne. So glad we did, portions are huge so decided on 2 starters and 2 sides to share instead of mains. BBQ spare ribs for 1( 5 mini ribs), sticky beef in teryiaki sauce, onion rings and dirty scoop chips. All absolutely delicious and beautifully served. Nice spacious dining room and lovely helpful staff. Will be back again”

“Absolutely amazing food and service. We were staying locally and needed dinner after arriving late. Stumbled across the Bowling Green and was blown away with the food. So much so that we came back on five evenings across our week stay. The steak was incredible, the chicken balmoral was delicious, the dauphinoise potatoes were creamy, sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Honestly cannot fault the food at this lovey local pub. They happily accommodated 8 of us, late on a Sunday! Will 100% be back.”
