About Medina
Medina is a cafe in Aberystwyth, at 10 Queen's Rd, where croissants and viennoiserie are baked fresh on site each morning alongside sourdough bread. The layout splits across two floors. Downstairs, guests find a table and order at the counter, while upstairs has table service with separate lunch and dinner menus. Customer Review Summary
Breakfast and coffee draw most reviewers, with the shakshuka named repeatedly as delicious, alongside the full breakfast, Turkish eggs, French toast and eggs and avocado. Close behind are the baked goods: fresh croissants and sourdough made on site, an apple and banana loaf, and gluten free chocolate brownie and cake described as moist and rich. Coffee is called great or lovely, with the hazelnut cappuccino and mocha singled out, and the falafel, salads and strawberry and mint soft drink also earn praise. Many describe the staff as friendly and welcoming, and one appreciates that dogs are allowed inside. Prices are described as on the higher end, though one reviewer feels the quality matches the cost. The criticism is sharper in two reviews. One found the sweet potato hash a mountain of boiled sweet potato and the service not that friendly. Another received a Hugo Spritz with cheap tasting Prosecco and no mint, only a wilted sprig added after asking, and called the waitresses sullen. One reviewer also finds the cakes and shortbread bite too sugary.

“Such a lovely place! The shakshuka was absolutely delicious and very well prepared, and the coffee was really good too. A big plus for the staff – they were very friendly, welcoming and smiley. Definitely worth a visit. We’ll be happy to come back! 😊”

“Visually this is a cool little cafe with nice seating etc. I ordered the sweet potato hash for breakfast and it was rubbish! Not so much a harsh as a mountain of boiled sweet potato. Service was okay but not that friendly. Coffee was decent!”

“Sadly, Medina seems to be trading on a reputation that our experiences simply haven’t lived up to. I ordered a Hugo Spritz and what arrived was a very poor attempt. Cheap tasting Prosecco, no mint and very little resemblance to a properly made Hugo Spritz. When I mentioned the missing mint, a wilted sprig was produced and plonked unceremoniously into my glass. For the price charged, it was embarrassingly poor. The service was equally disappointing. The waitresses were sullen, made little effort to engage and seemed completely uninterested in creating a welcoming atmosphere. In fact, the staff generally came across as unfriendly. Basic hospitality skills seemed to be in short supply. This wasn’t our first disappointing experience either. We ate here last year and the meal was mediocre. The fried potatoes tasted strongly of old cooking oil and were genuinely unpleasant. We decided to give Medina another chance because it has a good reputation locally, but I’m struggling to understand the praise. There are plenty of places in Aberystwyth where the food, drinks and welcome are far better. We won’t be returning.”

“Update: Stopped by for breakfast and while it might be a little bit more expensive than your usual café, it's well worth the money! The full breakfast was huge and extremely tasty. I particularly loved the sausage and beans 😬 What an amazing job they've done to this old pub! Really nice and clean with a great atmosphere too. Food was VERY good and at great prices. The buttermilk chicken and belly pork were top notch. Salads are delicious and great value if you order 4 of them. Will be back for sure.”

“Well we have been to Aberystwyth many times over the years. Our daughter is at Aberystwyth University and we come over quite alot fron Shropshire. I can honestly say the service, atmosphere and food here is exceptionally good. We had one of the breakfasts, don't expect just traditional English breakfast but something far more wonderful. This was our first time at Medina and it definitely won't be the last . They also have a lovely bakery in another part of Aberystwyth. Which we must visit next time. Decently priced food which was excellent quality .”
