  “Heard great things about Siam Cottage and finally got around to trying it after being underwhelmed by most of the other Thai restaurants in the city. Unfortunately it did not really live up to the hype. Was immediately taken aback by the pricing, almost £20 for all of the basic Thai noodle/curry dishes. Was also surprised at the amount of generic Chinese takeaway dishes on the menu. Usually we’d get a couple of appetisers but at £9/10 each across the board decided against it. Anyway, to the food. My pork pad kaprao was tasty enough (didn’t mind the pork strips instead of minced pork) but had almost zero Thai Basil in it so tasted absolutely nothing like it was supposed to (I can say without any hyperbole that the version I make at home tastes better and is more authentic). My wife’s chicken pad Thai was again tasty enough but the chicken was well over-cooked (dry and chewy) and was served with a lemon rather than the usual lime. Don’t know if that’s just a regional variation but again had me questioning authenticity (happy to be corrected). Almost £45 for those 2 dishes and a couple of ice teas is a lot more than I expected to pay to be honest. Overall it wasn’t terrible but doubt I’ll be back. Very much a 2.5 out of 5. 2 would be unfair but certainly no more than a 3.”

  “We happened upon this restaurant as we wondered through town less than 3 minutes from the fantastic maritime museum. My husband had the non spicy Grilled Beef with mushrooms and onions and I had spicy prawns with mushroom soup (Tom Yum Goong) both meals absolutely delicious and the hosts fantastic. Had we not been visiting from the South East of England, I would be a regular here! We arrived just as a large lunch party was winding down. They all seemed happy too.”

  “Siam Cottage is a small, cosy Thai restaurant that punches well above its weight. The star of the meal was the Thai green curry – rich, aromatic, and packed full of flavour. Easily one of the best Thai curries I’ve had in the UK – highly recommend getting it if you visit. The Pad Kee Mao seafood was another standout – they were generous with the seafood, including large, juicy king prawns and tender squid, all stir-fried perfectly with flat rice noodles and vegetables. We also tried the Pad Krapow (pork) which came with a satisfying fiery chilli kick – not for the faint-hearted, but full of bold flavour. Portions were generous, service was warm and friendly, and the entire meal felt like a comforting home-cooked treat. A must-visit if you’re in the area and craving authentic Thai cuisine!”

  “Bowl of prawn crackers served upon arrival, tasted nice and crispy, not too greasy. We ordered vegetable spring rolls and chicken with peanut butter sauce. For mains, pad Thai chicken and Thai green chicken curry. For dessert, banana fritters with cream and vanilla ice cream. Food was overall great, good size servings.”
